San Juan Cruise Port Highlights $42 Million in Infrastructure Investments at 2025 Steering Committee Meeting
San Juan Cruise Port held its first Steering Committee meeting of 2025, bringing together public agencies, tourism leaders, and private-sector partners to review infrastructure progress, operational priorities, and cruise industry projections for the year ahead.
The meeting reinforced SJCP’s commitment to transparency, collaboration, and long-term modernization under its Public-Private Partnership with the Puerto Rico Ports Authority and the Government of Puerto Rico.
Established as part of the 30-year concession agreement, the Steering Committee serves as a formal platform for strategic coordination among the organizations connected to Puerto Rico’s cruise and tourism ecosystem.
$42 Million Invested in Phase I Capital Improvements
Since officially assuming operations in February 2024, San Juan Cruise Port has invested $42 million between February 2024 and March 2025 as part of Phase I of its Capital Improvement Program.
These investments are focused on strengthening the port’s structural foundation, improving operational performance, advancing sustainability initiatives, and enhancing the passenger experience across key cruise facilities.
This first phase forms part of a broader $425 million long-term modernization strategy led by Global Ports Holding to prepare San Juan for the future of cruise travel.
Major Infrastructure Progress Across Key Piers
The Steering Committee meeting provided an opportunity to share updates on several major infrastructure projects currently shaping the port’s transformation.
At Panamerican West Pier, rehabilitation remains on track for completion in October 2025. The project includes full structural repairs to the pier and seawall, installation of new passenger boarding bridges, exterior improvements, and sustainable upgrades such as industrial skylights and high-efficiency ventilation systems.
At Pier 3 West, San Juan Cruise Port completed the demolition and reconstruction of the damaged mooring dolphin, along with dredging operations in January 2025 to support berth safety and functionality. These upgrades are also part of the work enabling San Juan to receive Icon-class vessels for the first time.
At Pier 4, improvements include structural underdeck repairs, demolition of exterior staircases, and continued rehabilitation work scheduled for completion in 2026.
Together, these projects strengthen berth capacity, improve safety standards, support operational efficiency, and reinforce San Juan’s ability to serve a wider range of cruise vessels.
Strong Coordination Across Puerto Rico’s Tourism and Maritime Sectors
The Steering Committee brought together representatives from key organizations within Puerto Rico’s cruise, tourism, and business community.
Participants included the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, the Puerto Rico Tourism Company, Discover Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce, the Puerto Rico Hotel & Tourism Association, and the Asociación de Restaurantes de Puerto Rico.
This multi-sector participation is essential. Cruise activity connects directly to local businesses, restaurants, hotels, tour operators, transportation providers, cultural attractions, and the broader visitor economy.
By maintaining structured coordination with public and private stakeholders, San Juan Cruise Port supports alignment around shared priorities, operational needs, and long-term growth opportunities.
2025 Cruise Projections and Future Expansion
San Juan Cruise Port projects more than 1.7 million passengers and 582 cruise calls in 2025, reflecting the continued importance of cruise tourism to Puerto Rico’s economy.
Looking ahead, upcoming projects extending into 2026 include the expansion of Piers 11 and 12 and the conversion of Pier 4 into a dedicated transit terminal.
These initiatives are part of SJCP’s broader strategy to modernize Puerto Rico’s cruise infrastructure, expand operational capacity, and strengthen San Juan’s competitiveness as one of the Caribbean’s most important cruise destinations.
Building Long-Term Competitiveness for San Juan
The 2025 Steering Committee meeting reflected a central priority for San Juan Cruise Port: ensuring that infrastructure investment is matched by transparency, coordination, and measurable progress.
Through continued modernization, structured public-private collaboration, and strategic capital improvements, SJCP is working to build a stronger and more competitive port for the future.
As Puerto Rico’s cruise industry continues to evolve, San Juan Cruise Port remains focused on supporting economic growth, improving port operations, and delivering long-term value for the island.
