San Juan Cruise Port Welcomes the Return of Oasis-Class Ships with Wonder of the Seas
San Juan Cruise Port marked an important milestone for Puerto Rico’s cruise industry with the return of Oasis-class cruise ships, highlighted by the arrival of Wonder of the Seas.
The call represented more than the return of one of the world’s largest cruise vessels to San Juan. It reflected the completion of a targeted infrastructure enhancement program at Pier 3, designed to restore full capacity for Oasis-class ships and prepare the port to receive Icon-class vessels for the first time in its history.
For Puerto Rico, this milestone strengthens San Juan’s position in the global cruise market and reinforces the importance of continued investment in the island’s port infrastructure.
A Major Step Forward for Pier 3
San Juan Cruise Port invested more than $10 million in structural and operational improvements at Pier 3 to support the return of Oasis-class vessels and expand the port’s capabilities for next-generation cruise ships.
The work included structural integrity assessments, specialized dredging to ensure the required draft depth, bollard reinforcement to support enhanced mooring capacity, repair and replacement of mooring dolphins, and the construction of a new platform engineered to accommodate Icon-class vessels.
These upgrades were completed in coordination with federal and local regulatory authorities to ensure compliance with applicable safety and operational standards.
The result is a stronger, more capable Pier 3 prepared to support larger vessels and more complex cruise operations.
Preparing San Juan for Icon-Class Vessels
The Pier 3 improvements restored San Juan’s ability to host Oasis-class ships while also preparing the port to receive Icon-class vessels.
This is a significant advancement for Puerto Rico’s cruise infrastructure. As cruise ships continue to evolve in size, design, and operational requirements, ports must be ready to meet the demands of the industry’s newest vessels.
By expanding its berthing capabilities, San Juan Cruise Port is helping ensure that Puerto Rico remains competitive for future cruise itineraries and continues to be considered for calls from some of the largest ships in the world.
Strong Economic Impact in a Single Day
The arrival of Wonder of the Seas brought more than 6,500 passengers and crew to San Juan, generating an estimated $700,000 in economic impact in a single day.
That impact extends across the local tourism economy, supporting Old San Juan merchants, tour operators, restaurants, transportation providers, hospitality businesses, and other service partners connected to the cruise visitor experience.
From August through December 2025, San Juan Cruise Port anticipates approximately 15 combined Oasis- and Icon-class calls. Each visit represents an opportunity to generate additional economic activity and strengthen the connection between port operations and local business growth.
Infrastructure Investment That Supports Long-Term Growth
The Pier 3 upgrades are part of San Juan Cruise Port’s broader modernization strategy. In 2025 alone, more than $52 million has been allocated to infrastructure improvements designed to reinforce operational capacity, improve port facilities, and support the long-term development of Puerto Rico’s cruise sector.
As part of the Global Ports Holding network, the world’s largest cruise port operator, San Juan Cruise Port is able to draw from international expertise in cruise port development, operations, and infrastructure planning.
That experience supports the efficient execution of complex projects while helping position San Juan for sustained growth in an increasingly competitive cruise market.
Strengthening Puerto Rico’s Role in the Global Cruise Industry
The return of Oasis-class vessels signals renewed strength for Puerto Rico’s cruise industry and reflects the value of investing in infrastructure that meets the needs of today’s cruise lines and passengers.
By restoring Oasis-class capacity and preparing for Icon-class vessels, San Juan Cruise Port continues advancing its role as a premier Caribbean cruise destination, a strategic port of call for mega-ships, and a high-impact contributor to tourism-related economic development.
As larger ships return to San Juan, the message is clear: Puerto Rico is ready to welcome the next generation of cruise travel.
