San Juan Cruise Port Celebrates Opening of Renewed Pan American Pier West
The $37 million reconstruction and modernization project delivers stronger marine infrastructure, an improved passenger terminal, and expanded capacity for homeport operations.
San Juan Cruise Port (SJCP), together with the Government of Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Ports Authority, celebrated the official ribbon cutting of the renewed Pan American Pier West.
The May 26, 2026, ceremony marked the completion of a comprehensive $37 million project that addressed longstanding infrastructure needs and transformed one of San Juan’s principal homeport facilities.
The renewed pier is designed to support larger vessels, improve operational efficiency, strengthen safety, and provide a better experience for passengers, cruise lines, employees, and service providers.
A $37 Million Transformation
The Pan American Pier West project included extensive improvements to both the marine infrastructure and the passenger terminal.
A new seawall extending more than 600 feet was constructed to reinforce the pier’s structural integrity and long-term durability. Bollards and fenders were replaced to meet the operational standards required by cruise lines, while the passenger walkway was completely reconstructed to address previous operational and safety concerns.
The project also introduced a new passenger boarding bridge, described as the first of its kind in Puerto Rico. Designed to accommodate the operational requirements of different vessels, the bridge will help streamline embarkation and disembarkation while creating a more efficient connection between the terminal and the ship.
A Renewed Passenger Experience
The transformation extended throughout the terminal.
Passenger restrooms were remodeled, new check-in counters were installed, and elevators and escalators were refurbished. The project also included improvements to flooring, interior and exterior paint, landscaping, parking areas, and signage.
More than 400 passenger seats were incorporated into the terminal, including dedicated VIP areas. These additions provide travelers with greater comfort while supporting the passenger volumes and logistical requirements associated with homeport operations.
Together, the improvements create a terminal environment that is more functional, welcoming, and prepared to support the complete passenger journey.
Strengthening San Juan’s Homeport Operations
Pan American Pier West is an important component of San Juan’s homeport infrastructure. Unlike a transit call, a homeport operation requires the coordinated movement of passengers, baggage, supplies, transportation, crews, and vessel services.
The renewed facility provides the infrastructure needed to manage these operations more effectively and accommodate cruise ships of greater size and capacity.
At the time of the inauguration, more than 100 cruise calls were scheduled at the facility for the 2026–2027 season, many connected to Royal Caribbean Group homeport operations. Official estimates presented during the event projected approximately $41 million in related economic activity during the season.
This activity generates benefits that extend beyond the port, supporting hotels, airlines, transportation providers, tour operators, restaurants, retailers, suppliers, and other businesses connected to Puerto Rico’s tourism economy.
A Public-Private Partnership Delivering Results
The Pan American Pier West modernization was developed by San Juan Cruise Port under its Public-Private Partnership with the Government of Puerto Rico.
The project forms part of the Initial Investment Program established under the agreement, which includes private investment commitments exceeding $200 million for the improvement and modernization of San Juan’s cruise infrastructure.
It also advances the broader investment plan of approximately $425 million intended to strengthen the port’s long-term capacity, competitiveness, and operational performance.
By combining public-sector oversight with private investment and technical expertise, the partnership is delivering permanent infrastructure improvements designed to generate lasting value for Puerto Rico.
A Milestone Built through Collaboration
The ribbon-cutting ceremony brought together Governor Jenniffer González Colón; Puerto Rico Ports Authority Executive Director Norberto Negrón Díaz; Puerto Rico Public-Private Partnerships Authority Executive Director Josué Colón Ortiz; Puerto Rico Tourism Company Executive Director Willianette Robles Cancel; and San Juan Cruise Port General Manager Clarivette Díaz.
Representatives from cruise lines, federal agencies, the maritime sector, and other port partners also joined the event, reflecting the collaboration required to deliver and operate infrastructure of this scale.
With Pan American Pier West renewed and operational, San Juan Cruise Port continues advancing the transformation of Puerto Rico’s cruise gateway.
The project represents more than the completion of construction. It reflects stronger infrastructure, improved service, new economic opportunities, and renewed confidence in San Juan’s future as a leading Caribbean homeport.
